Crimp Neck vs Screw Neck Perfume Bottles

Choosing a perfume bottle before confirming the closure system can create an expensive compatibility problem. The bottle neck, spray pump, collar, dip tube, cap and assembly equipment must work as one package. For fragrance brands, contract fillers and procurement teams, the decision between crimp neck and screw neck should therefore be made early.

What is a crimp neck bottle?

A crimp neck bottle uses a spray pump with a metal ferrule. During assembly, a correctly sized crimping tool compresses the ferrule around the bottle’s neck ring, securing the pump in place.

The closure is intended to remain fixed. Removing it normally damages the ferrule, so it is better suited to products designed as sealed packages rather than bottles intended for routine refilling.

The usual assembly sequence is filling the bottle, inserting the dip tube and pump, positioning the ferrule, applying an even crimp and checking the completed closure. The exact settings and inspection criteria depend on the selected bottle, pump and equipment.

How is a screw neck different?

A screw neck bottle has threads that match the pump collar. The pump can be installed without crimping equipment and can usually be removed more easily.

This format may suit refillable concepts, product-development trials or filling operations that do not use a crimping machine. However, buyers still need to confirm the exact thread, pump, gasket and cap combination. “Screw neck” alone is not a complete technical specification.

Check every component before ordering

Crimp and screw components are not interchangeable. Before approving a perfume bottle, ask the suppliers of the bottle, pump and filling equipment to confirm:

• Neck type and dimensions
• Compatible pump and ferrule or threaded collar
• Dip tube specification
• Cap compatibility
• Required crimping head or assembly method
• Approved fill volume and headspace
• Leak, spray and transport testing requirements

Do not rely only on a bottle photograph or nominal capacity. Request technical drawings and assembled samples. Test the complete package with the intended fragrance formula because the liquid, pump and sealing materials may interact differently.

Build closure checks into quality control

For a crimp closure, inspect ferrule alignment, visible deformation, pump movement and leakage. For a screw closure, check thread engagement, assembly consistency and leakage. Both formats require spray-function testing and an agreed inspection method.
